Siedliska is situated in the South Roztocze region. The town of Siedliska lies within the South Roztocze Landscape Park. Most of the area (67%) is forest. A sandstone elevation (335 m above sea level) can be found northwest of the town. This elevation is overgrown with mixed forest, pines, oaks, partly with firs and beeches; linden and hornbeam wet-ground forest can also be found here. These forests have been recognized by the Forestry Research Institute as seed forests, since they have the most valuable genetic traits. Protected plants that can be found in this area include: buławnik wielokwiatowy - species that is on the verge of extinction in Poland, buławnik mieczolistny, podkolan biały, orlik pospolity, lily, daphne, mech płonnik moss, periwinkle, whose stretches are richest in Poland, peat clubmoss, sundew. Slopes are overgrown with mountain plant species including thorny pteridophyte, giant woodrush, koryczka okółkowa. Neighbouring forests are inhabited by wolves, roes, wild boars, deers, foxes. Some rare bird species can also be found here: black stork, lesser spotted eagle, orzełek włochaty, hoopoe. Siedliska's soil cover is strictly connected with geological structure, landscape and water relations. Podzol soil developed from loess and loess formations is predominant. Brown sour soil, mud bog soil and limestone soil can also be found. Siedliska Humps are built of Tertiary formations. On the south-eastern side, Siedliska Humps are cut by deep valleys of Solokija tributaries, and loess is predominant in the eastern part of the subregion, which can be seen in an open pit next to Hrebenne-Siedliska road. In Siedliska you can find one of Prutnik river sources, with typical 'roiling' sand, and rare fossilized trees, which can be admired next to a very old oak, having 6.1 m in circumference, growing within Siedliska forester's lodge. Some magnificent trees from Canada - Douglas firs - can also be found here. Siedliska's natural environment is diverse and rich in species that are rarely found in Poland - for this reason, it is specially protected. Owing to these resources, the South Roztocze Landscape Park has been established here. |
